Submissions for the Khaled Alkhateb prize, named for a journalist killed in Syria, must include news video content from conflict zones
RT has opened submissions for the 2025 Khaled Alkhateb International Memorial Awards. The prize honors journalists covering conflict zones.
Entries must feature news video content from armed conflict zones, with each story or series limited to 10 minutes. Submissions are accepted in Arabic, English, or Russian; other languages must include subtitles in one of these languages. Only one application per journalist or team is allowed. Only videos published from October 1, 2024 to October 1, 2025 on media outlets or social media platforms will be accepted.
RT launched the annual awards in 2018 to commemorate the legacy of war correspondent Khaled Alkhateb.
Alkhateb was just 25 when he was killed in a shelling attack while working as a freelance correspondent for RT Arabic in the eastern suburb of Homs, Syria in 2017.
"Every year, dozens of heroes like Khaled lose their lives while fearlessly reporting from conflict zones around the world," Maya Manna, the head of RT Arabic, said.
Manna added that since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, more than 30 Russian journalists have died in Ukrainian shelling - and since October 2023, over 220 journalists have reportedly been killed in Gaza, making it the deadliest conflict for media workers in modern history.
Now in its eighth edition, the awards seek to recognize "the most fearless and courageous truth-seekers - war journalists," Manna said.
The competition is open to television reporters, freelancers, independent journalists, bloggers, and media organizations. Both freelance and full-time media professionals can apply using the official entry form. The jury will include members of the international media who have experience reporting from conflict zones. Winners will be announced in December.
