New Delhi [India], July 29 (ANI): Amid the ongoing debate in the Lok Sabha on Operation Sindoor, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram on Tuesday suggested that Bharatiya Janata Party should focus on current events rather than obsessing over allegedly 'twisting' events that occurred in the past.
Speaking to ANI, Chidambaram said, 'The External Affairs Minister should have confined himself to Operation Sindoor and the diplomatic aftermath of it. The problem with the BJP is that they always drive by looking in the rearview mirror; they don't look forward. They are always obsessed with twisting events that happened in the past. They should focus on what is happening right now.'
Asked about Congress MP Manish Tewari's post, Karti distanced himself from any internal disagreement.
'I don't know what he has said. The party is free to choose whoever it wants to speak in various motions,' he said, declining to comment further on intra-party decisions.
Earlier in the day, MP Manish Tewari on the social media website X had shared a media report on why he and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor were benched for a debate.
In the caption of the post, the Congress MP conjured Manoj Kumar's patriotic song from 'Purab aur Pashchim', ''Hai preet jahaan ki reet sada, main geet wahaan ke gaata hoon, Bharat ka rehne waala hoon, Bharat ki baat sunata hoon. Jai Hind.'
Congress leaders Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tewari, who were part of the delegations India sent to partner countries to highlight its stand against cross-border terrorism, would not be among Congress speakers during the debate on Operation Sindoor in Lok Sabha, sources said.
The sources said while Manish Tewari had sent a request to the party to speak during the debate, Tharoor apparently conveyed unwillingness as his stance during the visit abroad of the delegation would be at variance with the party's strong stance against the government on aspects related to the military operation to hit target infrastructure in Pakistan and PoJK. Tharoor led one of the all-party delegations.
Sources said the party has picked up some other leaders who will represent it during the 16-hour debate. They said Rahul Gandhi, who is the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, is likely to speak today.
Meanwhile on Monday, Tharoor gave a cryptic reply when asked if he would take part in the debate.
'Maunvrat, maunvrat,' Tharoor told reporters. (ANI)
