NEW YORK, New York - U.S. and global markets showed a mixed performance in Tuesday's trading session, with some indices edging higher while others retreated amid fluctuating investor sentiment.
The Standard and Poor's 500 (^GSPC) dipped slightly, closing at 6,225.52, down 4.46 points (0.07 percent). The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) fell 165.60 points (0.37 percent) to 44,240.76, while the Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) eked out a modest gain, rising 5.95 points (0.03 percent) to 20,418.46.
Small-cap stocks outperformed, with the Russell 2000 (^RUT) climbing 14.51 points (0.66 percent) to 2,228.74. Meanwhile, market volatility eased as the CBOE Volatility Index (^VIX) dropped 0.98 points (5.51 percent) to 16.81.
UK and European markets posted broad gains, led by the FTSE 100 (^FTSE), which rose 47.65 points (0.54 percent) to 8,854.18. Germany's DAX (^GDAXI) advanced 133.24 points (0.55 percent) to 24,206.91, while France's CAC 40 (^FCHI) gained 43.24 points (0.56 percent) to 7,766.71. The Euro Stoxx 50 (^STOXX50E) climbed 30.41 points (0.57 percent) to 5,371.95.
Asian markets were mostly higher, with South Korea's KOSPI (^KS11) surging 55.48 points (1.81 percent) to 3,114.95. Hong Kong's Hang Seng (^HSI) rose 260.24 points (1.09 percent) to 24,148.07, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 (^AXJO) inched up 1.40 points (0.02 percent) to 8,590.70.
Japan's Nikkei 225 (^N225) added 101.13 points (0.26 percent) to 39,688.81, but Taiwan's TWSE (^TWII) slipped 66.45 points (0.30 percent) to 22,362.27.
The U.S. Dollar Index (DX-Y.NYB) was nearly flat, up just 0.01 percent at 97.49. The Euro Currency Index (^XDE) gained 0.15 points (0.13 percent), while the British Pound (^XDB) fell 0.21 points (0.15 percent).
Brazil's Bovespa (^BVSP) declined 186.86 points (0.13 percent) to 139,302.84, while Mexico's IPC (^MXX) dropped 240.08 points (0.42 percent) to 57,183.32. Argentina's MERVAL (^MERV) surged 79,851.38 points (3.90 percent) to 2,129,785.50, marking a standout performance.
Investors remain cautious ahead of key economic data and corporate earnings reports later this week. Market participants will be closely watching inflation trends and central bank signals for further direction.
