New Delhi [India], February 13 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Congress Chief Tariq Hameed Karra has said that they have doubts about the Central government's intentions to provide statehood to the Union Territory, for which they are intensifying their demand.
Speaking to ANI, Karra asserted that they are not begging for anything but asking for what the Supreme Court had ordered.
'When will the time come to restore the statehood? We had a doubt that they would not even hold elections here because they are doing the best service to their party. Elections were conducted here on the orders of the Supreme Court, but the same Supreme Court had ordered the statehood, too, so now we are doubting their (central government) intentions, for which we are intensifying this demand. We are not begging for anything,' the J-K Congress Chief said.
Earlier this month, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the national capital and discussed the issue of statehood, the security situation and the budget session.
'The issues of J&K statehood, security situation, Budget session from 3rd March and governance were discussed,' the CM said.
A picture of the meeting was also shared by the Union Home Minister's Office on social media account X.
In November last year, the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly passed a resolution demanding the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's special status under Article 370. The BJP, which holds 29 seats in the assembly, opposed the resolution.
Notably, the restoration of Article 370, the reinstatement of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood, and the implementation of the autonomy resolution were key promises in the National Conference's manifesto for the Jammu and Kashmir elections.
On August 2019, the Central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi repealed Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, effectively ending the special status given to Jammu and Kashmir. (ANI)
