A woman waiting for a bus at 1450 W. Broward Blvd. had to get both her legs amputated after a multi-car crash left her critically injured the morning of February 19th, 2020 in Fort Lauderdale.
Police stated the bus bench crash happened near the westbound lanes of Northwest 15th Avenue and Broward Boulevard a little before 9:30 am. Two vehicles lost control and crashed into each other when one went spinning into a bus stop where two women were sitting.
Bus Stop Victims Suffered Serious Injuries
Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Battalion Chief, Stephen Gollan, stated that there were two vehicles involved in the accident that resulted in multiple injuries. Both women waiting at the bus stop were critically injured and one of them had to get amputate below the knees.
The two drivers inside the cars were also taken to an area hospital. However, they only had minor injuries and were later released. Gollan said the accident was absolutely horrific, especially since the victims were sitting on the bus bench minding their own business when the car crashed into them.
The Crash is Under Investigation
Police are not yet clear about the accident and the cause of the crash is still under investigation. Initial investigation shows that a silver car and a red van collided at Northwest 15th Avenue and Broward Boulevard.
The impact got the silver car to spin out of control and crash into a bus bench where two women were waiting for a bus. The accident seems to have happened so fast that the women did not get time to get out of the way as reported by an eyewitness, Rosemay Day.
Day said the van was turning and the silver car was going straight. She also expressed her opinion that the bus bench should never have been placed in a spot where a vehicle could crash into it.
Proving Negligence in an Accident
Bus accidents fall under Florida's comparative negligence doctrine. This dictates identifying all at-fault parties and claiming the damages as a percentage depending upon the extent of fault. A bus accident attorney would need to prove five elements to win a negligence lawsuit.
An experienced bus accident lawyer is necessary to prove negligence in any lawsuit.
