The woman was rushed to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Police are still looking into the cause of the crash and have asked eyewitnesses to come forward if they have any helpful information.
The DDOT bus was reportedly headed westbound on West Outer Drive. According to preliminary investigations, the driver struck the woman right in the middle of the street.
Michigan's No-Fault System Guarantees Economic Benefits
No-Fault system is designed to ensure that a victim of motor vehicle and bus accidents acquires certain economic benefits – regardless of fault. The benefits include reimbursement of medical expenses, nursing attendant care, mileage to medical appointments, and lost wages among others. However, it requires the experience of a city bus accident attorney to understand the extent of benefit.
Accident victims can file two separate claims under Michigan's No-Fault law:
Time Limits under No-Fault Act
It is important to get in touch with a city bus accident attorney ASAP since separate insurance policies have different notification requirements and deadlines. Bus Notice Provision requires victims filing claim against a regional transportation authority, such as SMART, DDOT, and CATA to serve written notice to the company within 60 days.
Legislative deadlines in regards to the No-Fault Act state that an accident victim needs to file their first-party claim for PIP benefits within one year of the accident. The third-party claim against the bus company or another party needs to be filed within three years of the accident.
Victims and their families should retain the services of a qualified and experienced city bus accident lawyer to ensure smooth filing.
